O.K., So You're the Next Tournament Chairperson. . .
SLGL Home Page

Here are some things to remember:
  1. A catchy name:

"Lederhosen" ?? OOPS! Sorry, that one’s taken!
    "The Easterly Chrysler Pro-Am" ??
    "The Tequila Open" ??
    "Dilligas Invitational" ??
"Son of a Beach Classic" ??

  2. Decide on the trophies you want to award and how the inscription will read; send the information to the Sec; the league buys these for you.

    Low Gross
    1st Low Net
    2nd Low Net
    3rd Low Net
    Minimum putts
    High Gross – optional

(Only SLGL members are eligible for Low Net prizes)

  3. Prize money needed – this will determine the tournament entry fee per player

(It’s usually $5 to $10 over green fees)
    Low Gross – 15%
    1st Low Net – 30%
    2nd Low Net – 20%
    3rd Low Net – 10%
    Minimum putts – 5%
    Closest to the Pin – KP (men/ladies) – 5% ea. = 10%
    Long Drive (men/ladies) – 5% ea. = 10%

Example: If green fees are $20, set your tournament fee at between $25 and $30. You may want to charge guests less since they will not be eligible for low net prizes . . . that’s up to you. If 20 golfers play (and pay), this gives you $100 to $200 for prize money!!

If it’s a $30 tournament fee, the breakdown will be like this:
    Low Gross - $30
    1st Low Net - $60
    2nd Low Net - $40
    3rd Low Net - $20
    Minimum putts - $10
    Closest to (2) - $10 each
    Long Drive (2) - $10 each

OF COURSE, YOU CAN BREAK UP THE PAYOFFS ANY WAY YOU WISH.

I recommend you visit local pro shops, restaurants, etc. and ask for any freebies for your tournament. You’ll be surprised what you can get. (These can be given out as door prizes . . . the more, the better)

  4. Send out a flyer as soon as possible with the following information:

Name of tournament and how to enter
Where (include map and official course scorecard, if possible)
    When (date and tee times)
Cost per league members and/or guests
Deadline for tournament entry and deadline for payment of tournament fees
Cart rental fee & number to call for cart reservation (or will you handle that also?)
    Hotel/Motel information, if necessary

Note: Please send all this information to the Sec and he will post on our SLGL website.

  5. Golfers usually enter tournaments intent on playing in a particular foursome! Lay out your foursomes carefully with consideration to handicaps, friendships, and requests. Give the tournament golfers plenty of notice as to which foursome they will be in and tee time.

The Sec will give you a handicap sheet listing the tournament handicap for each golfer in our league!

Guests play with a 0 handicap!

  6. Use a big piece of tag board to list all players and results. Leave spaces for GROSS score, HANDICAP, NET score, number of PUTTS and "NOTES".
  7. Please turn in all results and completed scorecards to your league secretary IMMEDIATELY after the tournament.

Thanks,

The Sec will be glad to help.
